The literal definition of identity is: the condition of
being oneself or itself, and not another. I personally believe identity is
defined differently from person to person, some of our identities are created
or based off other’s identity, and what society believe about us and our role
models. I believe in being self-constructed and looking to yourself to know you
are, and what you stand for. I believe society can only judge your identity
based off your past, rumors and appearance identity is from within.
I believe my personal identity is a lot more important than how society sees me, because society never sees the full picture of who you are, therefore doesn’t know. For example, I am currently the CEO of my own clothing line. As a leader of a business, a true entrepreneur my business is my number one priority, I recently quit my job as a waiter to fully focus on my business. Because my business comes first I have less effort to put into things such as school or sports. Society/ outsiders might look at my grades and see someone slacking, lazy or even careless, although if they knew me they’d know I’m a hard dedicated worker who’s devoted to what he is passionate about. I believe if you work on what you want to be every day and dedicate yourself you’ll slowly become what you pursue, no matter how society views you.
Having a balance of self-identity and other’s opinion about you is a healthy outlook. This relates to who I am a lot personally. As a business owner, I believe to become successful it’s vital to listen more than to speak. I believe this because often it’s more important to learn and observe than to always try to teach. It is also important to know who you are and what you stand for before you learn, educate yourself on what you believe in. To exemplify this I meet with successful or hard working business people that I know personally, that I can learn from to further my success. I take notes during meetings, and at the end I always review them. This is important because I see what’s important and relevant to who I am, and what new perspectives I can learn, but it’s also important so I know what information I don’t need and won’t help me personally. I believe as people this is a very healthy, important filter to have because it allows you to receive criticism and apply it to your life, without losing who you are and what you believe in.
